Topic: News – What's Ahead for Commodities – BusinessWeek
Some analysts worry that China will rein in the massive economic stimulus it has deployed to counter the worldwide recession to prevent an economic bubble from developing. He expects China to remove some of its stimulus and, once that happens, he predicts oil prices will fall due to oversupply, at least in the short term. If the dollar stabilizes, the oil market will be forced to focus on supply and demand again, says Flynn at PFGBEST. While China pushes for better-quality mortgage and other kinds of loans, the country will keep boosting its economy in other ways, according to Frank Holmes, commodities fund manager at U. He sees the government continuing to use its strategic dollar reserves to buy physical commodities such as oil and metals that it needs to support ongoing economic growth. read more

Topic: News – Universal Coverage: Treat Healthcare … – NewMajority.com
While advocates of greater government intervention in healthcare say that healthcare should not be treated like an economic commodity, healthcare is an economic commodity because of nature, and not because of any policy. Unless they are independently wealthy, they live either in nursing homes, or in government subsidized housing, with government subsidized attendant care. I have always thought that the money that government uses to subsidize services (such as housing projects, attendant care, and accessible transportation) would be better used being put into the hands of the disabled consumers. I have always thought it would be better for government money to be moved from providing services for persons with disabilities to direct payments to consumers with disabilities. With consumers of healthcare rather than employers buying insurance, competition would force insurance companies to devise plans that are more responsive to the needs and preferences of the consumers of healthcare. read more

Commodities hold steady amid mixed data – The Associated Press- Topic: News
Still uncertain about the strength of the economy’s recovery, investors were hesitant to buy gold, copper, soybeans and other materials that depend on robust economic activity to drive prices higher. There was good news in the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank’s report showing that factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region grew in August to its highest level in more than a year. Meanwhile, energy prices slumped after the previous day’s big advance that was driven by a government report showing an unexpectedly large drop in crude oil supply. While the report initially raised hopes that businesses and consumers are using more energy, the data actually showed that demand is not growing, but that imports are falling. read more
