As the housing market smolders, a commodities bubble heats up – Medill Reports- News

Filed under: News — Tony Spann @ 4:33 am

Commodities may well be the latest bubble, with precious metals and grains futures hitting record highs. Analysts and traders say the Federal Reserve?s policy of low interest rates is flooding the market with cash and inflating a grains and precious metals bubble. On Wednesday the Federal Open Market Committee is widely expected to lower the target rate, which is the rate at which banks make overnight loans to one another, by 50 basis points to 3 percent. Another likely contributor to the surge in commodities prices is the advent of indexes and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which provide investors a relatively simple way to buy a basket of futures contracts. The fading of open-outcry trading due to the surge in electronic trading has also contributed to a greater popularity in commodities investing. read more

Metal and oil hold promise this year – Economic Times- News

Filed under: News — Tony Spann @ 3:32 am

Trading in commodity futures increases the options for market traders. As a result, trading in commodities is becoming one of the preferred options for day traders (especially futures of precious metals – gold and silver). Due to lower margin deposit in the carrying positions in commodities futures, the leverage becomes higher and as a result the potential of profit and loss goes up. These factors pose a huge challenge for the traders in the commodities futures market. Since all the commodities contracts are not very liquid, traders should keep the liquidity aspect in mind before initiating positions. Since the commodities trading is still in an early stage here, traders should keep a watch on the brokerage applicable to them. read more

London shares down midday; NY seen lower on Apple outlook … – CNNMoney.com(News)

Filed under: News — Tony Spann @ 3:11 am

In the US, Wall Street looks set to open lower after a disappointing outlook from Apple Inc stoked concern about a slowdown in consumer spending in a market that remains unconvinced yesterday’s surprise interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve can stave off a recession. Meanwhile, Scottish & Newcastle fell back 8 at 738 as Carlsberg and Heineken are thought to have run into due diligence problems as they pore over the British brewer’s books before making a formal takeover offer of 800 pence per share, the Financial Times reported. On the upside, Prudential was the top riser, up 21-1/2 at 640 on reports in the 21st Century Business Herald that Ping An Insurance (Group) Co of China Ltd, the country’s second largest life insurer, may take a stake worth 100 bln yuan in the group. News – Rice futures trading : NCEL receives notification from SECP – Daily Times

Filed under: News — Tony Spann @ 3:07 am

The official said futures trading of commodities is a new concept in Pakistan and initially IRRI-6 has been chosen for futures trade. Highlighting the importance of futures trading, he said that with the help of commodities futures trading the government would be able to make better policies, as it would have an idea about the future trend of commodities by looking at the futures trade at the exchange. Absence of a futures market results in greater volatility in the spot market and exposes market participants to greater risks. The current stakeholders in IRRI-6 spot market will also be the primary participants in the IRRI-6 futures market. read more

Gold edges up, wheat soars higher – The Australian- About: News

Filed under: News — Tony Spann @ 1:53 am

GOLD futures posted a small gain in New York on Friday on late-day short covering, traders said. Silver also finished higher, seemingly faring better than gold for the second day in a row in large part due to less liquidation pressure in the white metal than the yellow, one analyst suggested. In grains trading, wheat futures soared on Friday amid supply concerns, with nearby Minneapolis Grain Exchange wheat scoring a new all-time high for the third consecutive session, traders said. At ICE Futures US, March arabica coffee futures finished US1. In Nymex energy trading, crude oil futures ended steady on Friday, paring early gains in a choppy day of trading as Bush administration proposals for a growth package failed to avert concerns the US is heading for recession. read more
