Commodities Continue Pullback on Economic Concerns – ABC News

Commodities fell again Friday as investors became increasingly pessimistic about the global economy. Uneasy investors pulled money out of riskier investments like commodities and poured money into safer assets like the dollar and bonds. A stronger dollar has an especially bad effect on commodities because it makes them less attractive to overseas investors. Investors remain on edge about how some struggling European nations, including Portugal, Spain and Greece, will cope with mounting budget deficits. Greece has been veering closer to defaulting on its debt, while Portugal’s opposition blocked austerity measures Friday aimed at trimming that country’s ballooning budget deficits. read more

This is the most successful new interest rate product launched in CME history in terms of volume and open interest growth since launch. CME Group turned in a strong fourth quarter financial performance, generating more revenue than any other quarter in 2009. I think first if you look at the overall picture, the marketing expense in 2008, a year where prior or just leading to the crisis at the end of the year, the marketing expense in 2008 was about $22 million a quarter. But within the interest rate futures complex, isn’t change in aftermarket yields, is it enough to really drive strong volume growth going forward or do we really need the Fed to kind of move benchmark rates around? read more

Commodities Fall as Investors Cut Back on Risk – ABC News

Prices for copper have been especially hard hit by China’s efforts to slow down its economy, Kevin Davitt, a senior market analyst at LaSalle Futures Group said. Rapid growth in China has been an important factor in driving up prices for copper and other commodities recently. Traders are still on edge about President Barack Obama’s plans to restrict trading by big banks and China’s move to rein in lending and tighten interest rates. The Energy Information Administration said natural gas supplies dropped by 86 billion cubic feet last week, less than analysts expected. Benchmark crude for March delivery fell 3 cents to settle at $73. read more
